Cowriting With The Universe
By Jesse Thomas
I’ve been a songwriter for 15 years, but in my spare time- often in the weirdest corners of the internet- I’ve spent much of the last 5 years studying quantum physics and the so-called “theory of everything.” What started as a side hobby turned into an obsession with frequency, waveforms, resonance, and the hidden mechanics of reality. What I didn’t expect was how much better it made my songwriting.
Ya see, music is in everything. Vibes, bro! Not metaphorically- literally. Every particle in existence, from stars to atoms to thoughts- vibrates. That vibration determines its place in the field- how it moves, how it interacts, how it shows up in the world. And every vibration makes a sound- even if we can’t hear it. You're living in a universe that sings.
Living life is kinda like writing a song- it’s guided by rules. If we apply what we know about songwriting, to our actual lives, they inform each other. The universe doesn’t just contain music- it is music. You tune a string by tightening or loosening its vibration. Adjusting our thoughts and emotions is how we tune our reality. Your entire experience- your joy, your blocks, your momentum- is based on how in or out of tune you are with your field. Controlling your emotional response is how you raise your vibration and clear your pathway- and should be your main focus, above all. Yes, even over studying Max Martin.
Think of it like this: the ocean is the Earth, your body is the boat, your thoughts are the wind, and your emotions are the sails. You can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sails. That’s how you steer your life. That’s how you find flow, and get to your truth.
But here's the catch- most of us don’t realize we can control the sails. We think we are the storm. We feel something- rejection, jealousy, fear- and assume that emotion is ours, because we're experiencing it. But it’s not. 10 people will have 10 different emotional responses to the same thing. Therapy, spiritual traditions, and self-help all say the same thing: don’t become the emotion. If you were the emotion, you couldn't observe it. So observe it. Life simply is a mirror of our beliefs. Emotions are the GPS. Beliefs are malleable. They can evolve the moment your emotional reaction to them does.
Here’s what that looks like in real life: You think, “I’ll never make it in this industry.” That thought brings a wave of panic or defeat, and will inform your writing. Instead of spiraling, you pause. You breathe. You notice the feeling without attaching to it. Then you ask: “Is this belief mine? Or did I pick it up somewhere?” That’s the work. That’s the tuning.
This is a Jedi-level life hack when mastered. It’s hard. It's ego death and takes radical accountability- but it’s the skill that changes your life. Once you learn to guide your emotional response, nothing can pull you off your path. That’s when your frequency becomes unshakable. That’s where the bangers live.
Change your emotions, and you change your frequency. Change your frequency, and everything shifts- what you feel, attract, and create. It might sound mystical, but it’s law. As a songwriter, you already speak this language. Harmony, dissonance, tension, release- we know the fabric of a good song, and it’s not just music theory. It’s life theory.
Your life is a symphony. And it’s the most important song you’ll ever drop.
Is that clocking to you? Because once you really get it- not just “that sounds cool” but deep-in-your-chest get it, that the quality of your existence, like a song, is governed by your vibration, something shifts. You stop stumbling through life and start composing it- and it’s how you start writing hits.
This isn’t woo-woo. It’s not a “think positive” insta quote. It's science. You are both the instrument and the composer. Get in harmony with yourself, and everything opens up. Writing becomes easy. Opportunities appear. Sounds too good to be true? It’s not. Let’s get into it.
We all know in our sessions, flow state is where most great ideas are born. So we want to create flow state in our day to day lives. Full presence void of resistance. Resistance shows up as fear, control, overthinking, people pleasing, perfectionism, jealousy, procrastination, judgment- and that static will knock you out of flow. It’s the clunky chord that ruins the chorus- and most of us don’t even realize we’re playing it.
But plot twist: resistance isn’t the enemy. It’s the teacher. It shows you where you are giving away your power. Caving on your truth. Dissonance teaches resonance. Pain teaches peace. Dark is how we know light. Being off-key is how we know what's in tune. You can't have rhythm without rest. Yin and yang, baby.
Every great melody needs contrast. So does life. If you’re in a flop era, good. Pain is our greatest teacher. That tension creates depth if you don't run from it.
Flow state comes when you stop resisting the off notes, when you stop panicking over the numbers, when you stop judging the cracks in your voice or your weird co-writer. Let it be what it is. That’s when you get out of your own way. Let it suck. Let it embarrass you. Observe your annoyance. Contrast polishes the pearl. And when you trust the process, you stop editing yourself into silence.
Your entire reality is responding to your signal. When you stop resisting the mirror, you move toward what wants to be. Your environment either raises or lowers your frequency. If your collaborators, habits, friends, or diet don’t resonate, your songs won’t either. Integrate, evolve, and choose a life that feels in tune with the real you. That is alignment. That is balance.
But who is the real you? You’ve been told hundreds of times to “just be yourself.” But what does that even mean in a world obsessed with being marketable, palatable, hot? Most of us don’t even know who our real self is. We’re just running on layers of programming. It feels authentic because it's all we know, and how we've survived so far.
When I did ayahuasca in Costa Rica for four days straight. The main goal was to remerge with our soul. In the workshops they explained how when we are young- pre-memory young, is when we start inheriting the beliefs of our parents and other people around us. We are told to be quiet, don't do this or that, boys don't cry, girls wear pink... whatever. Our truth becomes too disruptive to live in, so we adapt. By the time we become adults, those inherited beliefs feel like our own. Most people can't face the fact they have been living a half-truth. It's too painful to address what the world did to you, so they don't, and cling to what has worked so far. That is what keeps us in place. But that pain, if you so dare, is followed by freedom. That is self-love. That is integration.
Integration is of dire importance because only the real you will ever resonate. Your perspective is what makes you YOU-nique and is the one thing you have that no one else does. That vibration of truth, when you hit it with action, moves mountains. That’s why some songs blow up with no marketing. That’s why a voice note can hit harder than the polished track. Truth is what everyone seeks because it's liberating. Truth points people back to themselves. That's what we all want no matter how hard we fight it.
Authenticity is a cute buzzword, but to truly be authentic is a cheat code. Not authentically upholding beliefs that aren't yours, but upholding the beliefs of your soul. You don’t need to outsmart the algorithm. Desperation smells bad. Good art doesn’t beg to be seen. When it’s true, it travels. Stop trying so hard, and start trusting.
You don’t have to be scared. Truth can’t fail. It is the highest and most powerful frequency in the scale of life- even higher than love. Because love, as beautiful as it is, can be distorted. We learn love through other people’s projections- parents, religion, pop culture. That means it often comes with conditions, expectations, and inherited beliefs, but truth? Truth is pure. It’s clear. It’s coherence. It’s the alignment of all parts of you- mind, body, heart, soul- vibrating in sync. And that kind of resonance is undeniable. It cuts through noise. It makes people cry. It heals. It lands in the body like a tuning fork. Truth is the most vibrationally efficient waveform. No static. No pretending. Just signal. That’s why it always wins. And that’s on physics.
If your art isn’t landing, it’s not because your honesty doesn’t work. It’s because somewhere, you’re still not fully integrated. We're really good at buying into our own bullshit because it keeps us from seeing the parts of us the world told us to hide. But that shit is your sauce, and it's in there somewhere hiding under a bunch of fear.
So stop playing the game. Stop shrinking to fit the mold. Be you- ferociously. Be Weird. Be cringe. Especially cringe. Cringe, both directed inward or outward, is the tension of you breaking through your programming. A challenge to the beliefs you’re clinging to. Observe the why with curiosity, and consider maaaaybe being wrong.
Yeah- it’s hard. Collapsing an inherited belief is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. Your ego will throw every excuse in the book to keep you from facing the you you hide: “I don’t have a manager,” “I need a pub deal,” “I hate social media,” “The algorithm is rigged,” “I’ll never sing like Charlie Puth.” If you can blame someone or something else, then it's not your problem to fix. But what power do you have if you've given it all to circumstance? Those aren't truths, they are beliefs. If you think they are true, they will become just that- for you. Your brain is the final boss.
Whatever your excuse is- it’s just a distraction. The desire for a savior that isn't you, pushes the opportunities you think you need further away. Why? Because the universe will always point you back to you. If you resist yourself, the universe will send lessons, not rewards. The only way out is to re-write the song. To rewrite your program.
That’s the genius of the old one. It convinces you to stay put. Because at least that’s known, and there’s a safety that comes with that, but safety will only get you the same results. Safety is not growth. It’s your song on loop. Only you can break that cycle.
Stop waiting for a hero. You’re the hero.
“Making it” isn’t a finish line. It's a becoming. Stop over analyzing, and strategizing everything. That is fear. You’re already writing the song that matters most. Your life is your masterpiece. You’ll know you’re getting close when people are naturally attracted- or disrupted by you. Both are signs you’re hitting the truth frequency. The clearer the tone, the louder the resonance. We all have this inside of us- but you gotta dig. Then dig some more. Then dig some more. The ones brave enough to go there- are the ones who will win.
And the best part? When you finally do this- not just perform authenticity, but live it- you stop craving the stuff you thought was inspiring you all along. We think we're writing songs to make it out. We're not. We write them to find our way in- and in doing so, we help others. That's the birthplace of undeniable art.
The validation, the Grammy, the house, the blue check- they will come- but you won't need them anymore. There will be no thrill like being seen and loved for the real you. The one you cast away. The one life told you has no business here. There’s nothing the industry can give you that beats that. That’s the hit.
So do it, pussy. Let yourself out of the cage.
It’s not locked.
